MESIODENSE
WHAT IS A MESIODENSE (EXTRA TOOTH) ?
We have 2 sets of teeth during our lifetime.
There are primary (baby) teeth and adult teeth. People typically have 20 primary and 32 adult teeth.
Its also possible to have an extra or supernumerary tooth. The most common is “mesiodense.
A mesiodense appears at the front of your upper jaw between or behind your two front teeth (incisors). It is typically conical in shape and occurs more often with adult teeth.
Mesiodense is rare. While its prevalence can vary by location, community. It is estimated to affect between 0.15% and 0.19% of the general population. It is also more common in men than women.
When a mesiodense is present, its important that its treated in a timely manner. This is because leaving it can potentially cause dental problems later on.

MESIODENSE CAUSES:
– The exact cause of mesiodense is still unknown. Its possible that genetics, environmental factors and changes during dental development may all play a role.
– other health conditions associated are :
cleft lip and cleft palate.
gardener’s syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes growth to appear on various parts of the body.
cleidocranial dysplasia, a rare genetic condition that leads to unsual development of the bones and teeth.
orofaciodigital syndrome, a rare genetic condition that impacts the developmenta of the mouth and teeth as well as facial features, fingers and toes.
HEALTH RISKS OF HAVING A MESIODENSE
INTERFERENCE WITH OTHER TEETH.
Delayed eruption of surrounding teeth.
Displacement of surrounding teeth
Increase in crowding in the area of mesiodense
Misalignment of teeth (malocclusion)or problems with bite.
Formation of a distema , or space between your 2 front teeth.
Dilacerations of surrounding teeth, which is where the root or crown of a tooth has abnormal bend.
Root resorption of surrounding teeth, which is where the root structure of the tooth is dissolved.
Interference of a mesiodense with surrounding teeth can lead to necessity of future dental or orthodontic treatments. Thats why its important to identify and treat a mesiodense.
CYST FORMATION
A cyst is a sac of fluid that forms in the body. When a mesiodense remains unerupted (impacted), can lead to the formation of a type of cyst called dentigerous cyst. Such cysts when small wont cause symptoms. But the larger ones acn cause swelling or displacement of surrounding teeth.
ERUPTION IN TH NASAL CAVITY
In some rare cases mesiodense may erupt in the nasal cavity which causes pain, swelling and nasal obstruction.

MESIODENSE DIAGNOSIS:
They are found in early childhood. They are often detected during routine dental examination and x-rays. Patient, parents themselves may even notice it on their own , prompting a visit to the dentist
About 79 to 91% of mesiodense remain impacted. Some signs that an impacted one may show are crowding, misalignment of teeth and delayed eruption of surrounding teeth.
Your dentist may collect xray images from several different angles to diagnose a mesiodense.
MESIODENSE TREATMENT:
Management of mesiodense typically involves extraction of teeth.
However in some situations, such as if a mesiodense is a baby tooth ans isn’t causing complications , a dentist may recommend watching over it instead.
EXTRACTION
SIMPLE : WHERE IN THE MESIODENSE IS REMOVED WITHOUT ANY INCISIONS.
SURGICAL : IN CASE OF IMPACTED TOOTH A SURGICAL EXTRACTION IS NEEDED. THIS INCLUDES INCISIONS AND STITCHES.
