Your tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth with a cord (membrane), and we call this cord ‘Lingual Frenum.’ It performs the function of anchoring the tongue to the surface of the mouth. This permits the tongue to move in a way to facilitate proper tasting, speech, chewing, and other functions.

Ideally, the lingual frenum is elastic and does not interfere with the movements of the tongue in sucking, eating, swallowing, etc. When it is short, thick, tight, broad, or extends from the margin of the tongue, it restricts the natural movement of the tongue. It adversely affects oro-muscular function, feeding, speech, etc., and we call this condition the Tongue Tie.

Does my child have a tongue tie?

You can ensure this in two ways. First, by looking at the tongue and lingual frenum (signs). Second, by monitoring the issues (symptoms) your child may have.

Signs to look for:

• Your child has difficulty sticking their tongue out.⁠
• Your child’s tongue looks notched or heart-shaped when they stick it out.⁠
• They have difficulty moving their tongue from side to side.⁠
• The tip of your child’s tongue can’t reach the roof of their mouth or further than the edge of their lower lip.⁠

• Trouble latching on or staying attached to your breast⁠.

How is tongue tie treated?
